UPMC’s Nurse Residency Program: Setting nurses up for success

By: Ella Tobin

UPMC is continuing to elevate excellence in nursing throughout its footprint. This September, a team of UPMC experts published research in the Journal for Nurses in Professional Development that examines an innovative approach to onboarding new nurses, setting them up for success in the first year of their career.

As a nurse’s first year in practice can be stressful, with increased stress and high turnover rates, the UPMC team looked to address these hardships, especially in the wake of industry-wide staffing shortages and created a new approach to engage with new nursing hires. UPMC’s Nurse Residency Program (NRP) offers a system-wide, unified approach to offer support for new members of the nursing team.

The NRP encourages nurse residents to share their concerns and questions about their practice and prioritizes engaging nurses with their team members and superiors. The program’s curriculum, taught by UPMC’s own clinical educators, provides not only clinical guidance, but also insight related to wellbeing, confidence, and professionalism.

The program also offers monthly wellness check-ins throughout the nurses’ first year. These conversations are tailored to each individual nurse, supporting them through their transition into UPMC and working through concerns as they rise along the way.

Overall, the program has seen much success with new nurses. A survey administered three months into the implementation of the program showed 488 favorable responses and one negative response. UPMC Nursing remains committed to improving and refining the program as it evolves based on the feedback of each nurse in the program.
