First Day of Summer Brings "Take a Vacation From Cancer" to UPMC East

By: Melissa Allen

Today marks the first day of summer and UPMC CancerCenter Radiation Oncology at UPMC East celebrated by holding “Take a Vacation From Cancer Day.” The staff gave away flip flops, sunscreen and Relay for Life T-shirts as well as held a basket raffle and offered summer-themed food to more than 40 patients and their guests.

The goal of the event was to ease some of their stress and welcome summer – and to have fun doing it!

“Today I’m not sure who smiled more – the patients or the staff. It was an awesome way to start the summer season and another  awesome year here at UPMC East,” said Elaine Dodd,  manager of Radiation Oncology at UPMC East.

In addition to the other events, a vacation-themed cake was donated by Nicole Harchuck, a thyroid cancer survivor, owner of the Sugar Rush Shoppe, and daughter of Leslie Dollman who works at the Mary Hillman Jennings Radiation Oncology Center.
