The University of Pittsburgh School of Dental Medicine has opened the Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery and Prosthodontics specialty practice at UPMC Montefiore. This new clinic will specialize in treating surgical cases, including patients with cancer and those who have experienced facial trauma or have facial conditions that require coordinated care with other services at UPMC.
The new clinic provides continuity of care and expanded treatment options for specialty patients who previously received dental care at the UPMC clinic at Montefiore, while general dentistry patients of the former clinic are now being seen at Pitt Dental Medicine across the street at Salk Hall. Pitt and UPMC’s General Practice Residency Program is being reestablished to support this patient population.
The new specialty practice, which strengthens the collaboration between Pitt Dental Medicine and UPMC, will be equipped with the latest technology in both oral and maxillofacial surgery and prosthodontics, ensuring that practitioners can offer cutting-edge treatments, digital dentistry and advanced surgical techniques to improve precision and patient care.
Another key advantage of the clinic is its proximity to UPMC hospital services that are often part of specialty patient care. For example, patients with temporomandibular disorders, who may be seen by UPMC neurology, pain medicine and rheumatology providers, will get more coordinated care at the clinic. Likewise, patients who require dental procedures as part of treatment for cardiac valve surgery, chemotherapy, radiation and joint replacement will have access to multidisciplinary care with medicine, oncology and orthopedic surgery.
Designed with the patient’s experience in mind, the practice will offer more efficient and streamlined appointments due to the collaborative nature of care. It will also serve as a hub for education and research, providing opportunities for Pitt students and residents to learn in a cutting-edge clinical environment and advancing research in oral and maxillofacial surgery and prosthodontics.
