UPMC Schools of Nursing Celebrate 178 New Graduates

The UPMC Schools of Nursing graduating classes of 2022 celebrated commencement ceremonies this weekend with 178 new nurses ready for the next steps in their careers. Ceremonies were held Friday at Soldiers and Sailors Memorial Hall in Oakland for graduates of UPMC Mercy, UPMC St. Margaret and UPMC Shadyside Schools of Nursing. The inaugural commencement for the UPMC Jameson School of Nursing at Hamot was also held on Friday.

Maribeth McLaughlin

UPMC Chief Nurse Executive Maribeth McLaughlin welcomed the graduates into the field of nursing with wise words – that nursing is more than a profession — it’s a calling. “Each day as you leave your shift, think of one thing that you did that touched a patient, family, or peer. Maybe you eased someone’s pain, helped them through a procedure, made a good catch keeping a patient safe, held someone’s hand, let a family member spend time with their loved one, taught a mom how to care for her new baby, or helped someone end their suffering. Every day you will make a difference in the lives of those you care for and their families” McLaughlin said.

UPMC’s six hospital-based nursing schools combine clinical experiences with exceptional academics, with campuses at UPMC Hamot, UPMC Shadyside School of Nursing at Harrisburg, UPMC Jameson School of Nursing at Hamot, UPMC Mercy, UPMC St. Margaret and UPMC Shadyside. All campuses enable students to earn a nursing diploma in as little as 16 months at a cost that is less than the average cost of one year of college tuition.

Students can apply to any of the six UPMC Schools of Nursing campuses by June 1, 2023, to begin classes in fall 2023. Learn more and submit your interest at UPMC.com/nursingschool. UPMC Mercy School of Nursing is currently offering a limited Summer 2023 start. The deadline for applications is March 1, 2023.
