MckeesportAbout 30 people gathered in the UPMC McKeesport hospital gift shop last week to celebrate its 80th anniversary. Since its inception, the shop has been staffed by volunteers from the McKeesport Hospital Junior Committee, which consists of a long list of women who have dedicated their lives to raising funds for the McKeesport Hospital Foundation.

Jill Mohlman, president of the Junior Committee, welcomed the crowd and introduced those who were there to recognize the hard work and dedication of the group. Proclamations were presented by Alison Piccolino, representing state Sen. Jim Brewster; Tom Maglicco speaking on behalf of state Rep. Mark Gergely; and McKeesport Mayor Mike Cherepko. All noted the many years of dedication by the ladies of the Junior Committee who have raised more than $3 million to date.

“We are truly grateful for their selfless dedication and recognize that the gift shop is not just a place to make purchases, but it also is the heart of the hospital where many relationships and memories are made,” said Mark Sevco, president, UPMC McKeesport, who was there along with several members of the UPMC McKeesport Board and McKeesport Hospital Foundation.

As part of the celebration, the Junior Committee presented a check for $20,000 to Eliana Latterman, the director of the McKeesport Hospital Foundation. The money will be used to improve technical capabilitis of the MRI suite.

“The fact that they have been able to maintain such a high level of giving for 80 years speaks to the efforts of each and every one of the volunteers,” Latterman said. “We appreciate their hard work, their trust in the Foundation and their collaboration with the hospital.”
