Leading with Passion at UPMC Passavant

By: Ella Tobin

Jonathan Crossett, RN, BSN, CCRN, unit director, Medical Surgical ICU, UPMC Passavant, began his career at the UPMC Shadyside School of Nursing. His first position was in the trauma ICU at UPMC Presbyterian in 2012 and, although the transition to clinical practice was hard work, he acclimated and thrived, working as a staff nurse for eight years before becoming a clinician.

“It’s challenging but certainly worth it. The work is all about when a young person comes in who may not have had a high chance of survival and now, they’re walking around,” Jonathan emphasized about the patients he cared for.

After 10 years of service, Jonathan felt that he needed a change and decided to take a temporary three-month contract as a travel nurse at Uniontown Hospital during the COVID-19 pandemic. His decision to come back to UPMC in 2021 was driven by his appreciation for the resources and support available to help staff deliver Life Changing Medicine within the organization.

“It was eye-opening, as being outside of UPMC gave me more perspective and more appreciation for what it means to be part of a larger system,” Jonathan said. “Your access to some of the best resources within UPMC with its 42 hospitals and strong ICUs support you in providing the best care for our patients and communities.”
