Dr. Bruno Gridelli to Retire

By: Staff Report

Dr. Bruno Gridelli will retire from his role as chief medical and scientific officer for UPMC International and country manager of UPMC in Italy at the end of this year.

A transplant surgeon who trained under the legendary Dr. Thomas Starzl, Gridelli became medical and scientific director of UPMC-managed ISMETT in 2003 and director general in 2009 after developing successful transplant programs for adults and children at Policlinico Hospital in Milan and Ospedali Riuniti di Bergamo. He was instrumental in the growth and success of ISMETT, a public-private partnership whose transplant outcomes are among the best in Europe.

Since taking on his expanded international role at UPMC in 2007, Gridelli has helped the health system to become a major force in Italian health care and medical research – and a trusted health care partner around the globe, with a particular focus in recent years on Italy, Ireland, China and Kazakhstan.

Under his leadership, UPMC in Italy has grown to encompass a staff of about 1,200 at multiple hospitals, cancer centers and outpatient facilities providing a wide range of high-quality clinical services – while starting construction on a major biomedical research center that promises life-saving advances and significant economic growth for the Region of Sicily.

Additional details on this leadership transition will be announced at a later date.
