The February edition of First Friday focuses on the effort and ingenuity of UPMC teams and individuals who work to provide compassionate care amid complicated, rapidly changing times.
Health care professionals face unique and unpredictable risks, often while supporting patients and families during the most stressful moments of their lives. For teams to provide compassionate, high-quality care, they must feel and truly be safe each day. The responsibility for a safe environment extends beyond the patient to every member of the health care workforce — frontline caregivers, support staff, and clinical leaders alike. At UPMC, safety is a lived commitment, continuously practiced and re-evaluated to address both patient and worker needs. As the organization continues its focus on safety, the collective efforts of these individuals are vital to building a safer space for everyone involved in care.

“Our people deserve to be and feel safe in their workplace,” said Chris Vistas, vice president, Operations, UPMC Magee-Womens Hospital. “Our patients need an environment that fosters healing, and our visitors play an essential role in that healing process. We must continue to press forward, and I am proud of UPMC for taking these steps.”
