UPMC and the Pittsburgh Penguins hosted a COVID-19 vaccination clinic Monday at PPG Paints Arena.
To date, UPMC has administered 237,726 first and second doses of the Pfizer and Moderna vaccines. Monday’s mass vaccination event, which saw patients by appointment only from 8 a.m. until 2 p.m., complements UPMC’s 22 vaccination clinics across the Commonwealth.
“We are grateful to the Penguins for generously partnering with us and offering PPG Paints Arena for this clinic. They have the facility, and we have the expertise,” said Mark Sevco, president of UPMC Children’s Hospital of Pittsburgh. “We are confident this space, along with UPMC’s experience in hosting vaccination clinics, will provide our patients with a memorable experience. This is a proud step in our continued effort to administer the vaccine to the many Pennsylvanians who are eager to contribute to ending the pandemic.”
One thousand vaccines were administered at PPG Paints Arena, and UPMC is scheduled to administer 5,000 doses across the system today at its numerous vaccination sites.
Last week alone, UPMC administered 22,000 vaccines to people that qualify under Pennsylvania’s 1A grouping. As UPMC receives more vaccine supply, its network of clinics will be able to accommodate up to 80,000 vaccinations per week.
UPMC and the Penguins will again partner for a drive-through clinic at the UPMC Lemieux Sports Complex in Cranberry on Wednesday.
“We’re well-equipped to host events such as this one, and our team has been trained to bring people in and out of the building safely. We are excited to host more vaccine clinics in the future,” said David Morehouse, president and CEO, Pittsburgh Penguins. “The message here is hope. When you see these vaccines being rolled out, you can see light at the end of the tunnel.”
