UPMC Expands Regional Vaccine Clinics

By: Lisa Lombardo

As of March 16, UPMC has administered over 243,000 COVID-19 vaccines — including more than 22,000 doses during the previous week alone.

Across every region it serves, UPMC is operationalizing new community vaccination clinics each week. As the health system receives vaccine supply from the Commonwealth, its network of clinics will be able to accommodate up to 80,000 vaccinations per week.

All UPMC COVID-19 clinics are appointment only and walk-ins cannot be accommodated. If you are eligible to receive a COVID-19 vaccination, you can register with UPMC at https://vaccine.upmc.com/.

Allegheny County Region

The UPMC South Side COVID-19 Vaccine Clinic is one of UPMC’s busiest sites, vaccinating more than 5,000 people a week. A newly established partnership with the Pittsburgh Penguins will enable mass vaccination events for people in western Pennsylvania to receive COVID-19 immunizations. Clinics this week include PPG Paints Arena on Monday, March 15, and a drive-up clinic at UPMC Lemieux Sports Complex in Butler County on Wednesday, March 17.

UPMC St. Margaret’s clinic at UPMC Outpatient Center in Harmar is scheduling 2,000 appointments per week and UPMC East is vaccinating roughly 700 patients per week at the hospital. UPMC Passavant’s community clinic at Cumberland Woods Village Conference Center in McCandless Township plans to schedule a few thousand appointments per week for residents of Allegheny, Beaver and Butler counties.

To build trust and improve overall health outcomes, UPMC is partnering with a variety of organizations to launch community-based clinics in under-resourced areas across Allegheny County. On March 13, UPMC partnered with Bethany Community Ministries, a faith-based organization, to administer 500 COVID-19 vaccines to Pittsburgh residents, close to their homes in Homewood. On March 16, UPMC McKeesport is holding a community clinic at the Mansfield Building in McKeesport, and next weekend UPMC will host a vaccine clinic for the Wilkinsburg community.

Altoona Region

UPMC Altoona and UPMC Bedford community clinics are both operating five days a week. UPMC Somerset recently launched its clinic and is currently scheduling appointments two days a week.

UPMC Western Maryland continues vaccinating people in its communities in line with Maryland state guidelines.

Northwestern Pennsylvania Region

Thousands of community members are vaccinated each week at sites operated by UPMC Hamot, UPMC Horizon – Greenville, UPMC Horizon – Shenango Valley, UPMC Jameson, UPMC Kane and UPMC Northwest.

UPMC Chautauqua continues to vaccine non-UPMC health care workers, in line with New York state guidelines.

Pinnacle Region

Last week, UPMC Pinnacle vaccinated nearly 7,000 community members, conducting an average of 12 clinics per week in the southcentral Pennsylvania region. UPMC is collaborating with community organizations, the Harrisburg Housing Authority and churches in Harrisburg and York to set up more central Pennsylvania clinics.

UPMC also joined other Lancaster County health systems and county officials to form the Vaccinate Lancaster Coalition, which opened a mass vaccination center in a former Lancaster department store.

Susquehanna Region

Five clinics operated in Williamsport, Hughesville, Lock Haven, Coudersport, and Wellsboro have administered more than 10,000 doses. Larger sites vaccinate approximately 800 people per day, and smaller sites vaccinate 300 people per day. In the coming weeks, the Williamsport and Hughesville sites will centralize into one location that will provide 3,000 vaccines per day on Saturdays and Sundays.
