UPMC CancerCenter staff was honored this week by two cancer advocacy organizations for helping to raise money and spread awareness.
Staff from the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society on Wednesday presented UPMC CancerCenter staff with a special team trophy for their fundraising efforts at the various 2014 Light the Night walks this past fall. There were four walks total -Pittsburgh (Heinz Field), Erie, Johnstown, and Uniontown – and UPMC CancerCenter participated in all of them.
An astounding $30,701 was raised, making UPMC CancerCenter the fourth highest donor in the region. Donations from the walks provides local patients with co-pay assistance, supports critically-needed research for cures, and gives hope to patients and their families with a variety of support programs.
UPMC CancerCenter has been participating in the Light the Night walks for more than 15 years. The number of participants started out small, and it has been growing steadily each year.
Also on Wednesday, staff from the American Cancer Society presented UPMC CancerCenter with an award for being the top fundraising company for the Making Strides Against Breast Cancer walks in October.
There were five walks total— Pittsburgh, Erie, Bedford, Blair County, and Washington County. For the first time, these walks were promoted systemwide at UPMC, and the outcome was impressive. There were more than 300 participants — with 33 teams at the Pittsburgh event alone – and $22,000 was raised.
