The Numbers Don’t Lie

By: Ed DeWitt

Progress, by definition, is forward movement toward a destination. Since launching in the spring of 2023, the UPMC Center for Sustainability has measured its progress in several ways. From ideas evolving and becoming a reality, to fostering an atmosphere that promotes goals for a healthier, greener future, the center has seen great success in driving measurable sustainable changes
across UPMC’s footprint.

Along with two years of innovation, drive, and determination, the center now has something else it can use as a litmus test — data. Almost every project, adjustment, and pivot toward sustainable gains brings along a treasure trove of analytical information that shows if a directive is making a difference.

From reducing food waste and cutting back on harmful greenhouse gas emissions, to making wise,
sustainable purchasing decisions, the center’s progress is now starting to show in quantifiable ways.

As the saying goes, the numbers don’t lie.

This story is featured in the April issue of First Friday UPMC’s digital internal magazine, which publishes monthly and aims to capture the spirit of innovation, dedication to caring, and attention to quality that permeates the work done across UPMC every day.

April’s edition illustrates the power of one — how one generous donation, one dedicated nurse, or one sustainable initiative can inspire change and create a ripple effect that extends far beyond the initial gesture. These intertwined stories reflect the compassionate and innovative spirit of UPMC, showcasing a dedication to patient care, life-saving generosity, and commitment to sustainability.
