UPMC and the Technological University of the Shannon (TUS) are partnering to create UPMC Sports Medicine clinics in Limerick and Tipperary, Ireland, to serve both TUS and the wider sporting community in those regions.
The clinics, located on two TUS campuses, are expected to open to university athletes, the public, sports clubs and teams in the region as early as this summer.
Owned and operated by UPMC Sports Medicine, the clinics will be equipped and staffed to provide evidence-based, quantitative measurements of strength and performance for optimal care. They will also include equipment to help with diagnostics, recovery and athletic development.
The president of TUS, Vincent Cunnane, said the new partnership would not only bring the most highly developed sports training and treatment facilities to Limerick and Tipperary, but also allow for further research and education in the area of sports conditioning, rehabilitation, and injury diagnostics and treatment.
“TUS is also working closely with UPMC to design a new academic program that will ensure our graduates have the most in-demand skills in this area when they graduate,” he added.
The new clinics will complement the UPMC Sports Medicine clinic at WIT Arena in Waterford and “bring advanced equipment and treatments close to home for athletes of all skill levels,” said David Beirne, managing director of UPMC in Ireland.
