UPMC has again been recognized as a leader in recruiting and hiring individuals with varying disabilities, receiving the coveted 2015 Disability Matters Employer of Choice award and Disability Champion Award at the 2015 Disability Matters North America Conference.
UPMC was honored for workforce development programs and the ways it assists individuals facing barriers to obtain work at UPMC. Corporate initiatives such as the Military Talent Network, Partnership on Work Readiness and Retention, Project SEARCH and Young Leaders Academy enable UPMC to work with various community partners and individuals with disabilities to assist them in preparing for job opportunities at UPMC. These initiatives also serve as recruitment pipelines and help decrease employee turnover.
Mark Lunz, director of surgical central services at UPMC Presbyterian and Montefiore received the Disability Champion Award for his advocacy and commitment in support of mainstreaming those with disabilities throughout UPMC. Over the past three years, Mark has hired a number of associates through Project SEARCH, which helps equip eligible young people with intellectual and developmental disabilities to join Pittsburgh’s competitive workforce through hands on training.
“Mark’s team happily tells the story of how the people with disabilities on his team have changed the culture of the department,” explained Shannon Williams, UPMC senior manager, recruitment. “There is now a true sense of partnership among the team as everyone treats each other with dignity and respect. They support and mentor each other and work together to ensure our patients are receiving the best care possible.”
The Disability Matters conference is recognized as the premiere event for corporate executives to come together for the purpose of learning and sharing today’s best and next practices relative to the mainstreaming of individuals with disabilities in the global workforce, workplace and marketplace.
