A new year often brings new beginnings, and the January issue of First Friday is no different. With the first installments of two recurring series, “In Your Words” and “Journeying With Patients Through Life,” readers can begin to follow first-hand accounts from staff about their work, as well as stories about the profound impact that nurses have on patients through many phases of life.
Amidst the newness, it can be equally exciting to revisit old favorites. Spotlighting a new group of employees and their “hidden talents,” this issue once again pulls back the curtain on the unique abilities and skills that make up a diverse creative culture across our organization.

The new, recurring series “In Your Words” is an opportunity for UPMC employees to contribute personal essays, narratives, or other creative expression in relation to their work in health care. In this first feature, Melony Murray, DNP, shares her raw reflections on an impactful shift, how it shaped the perception of her career goals, and what moves us forward through difficult moments.
Journeying With Patients Through Life: Part One
Nurses travel life’s journey with patients, holding their hands through both challenge and triumph. This feature highlights NICU nurses who support UPMC’s smallest patients and is the first installment of a new multi-part series in First Friday about how nurses care for patients throughout the various stages of life.
Hidden Talents
From makers and creators to scuba divers and hip-hop artists, UPMC employees share their “hidden talents” outside of their daily work of providing outstanding care to patients or supporting our organization as a whole.
