Last fall, Samantha Protin was looking forward to the early-winter birth of her first child. Like most pregnant women, she didn’t realize she was at heightened risk for serious complications from the flu. A miscommunication with her doctor’s office caused her to miss her flu shot. In January, she contracted the flu, which led to advanced pneumonia, an emergency c-section and several days of hospitalization.
