Dr. Raul Nogueira Named Director of UPMC Stroke Institute and Appointed Professor of Neurology at Pitt

Internationally recognized stroke expert Raul Nogueira, M.D., has been appointed director of the UPMC Stroke Institute and professor of neurology, with a secondary appointment in neurosurgery at the University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine. Nogueira will be the inaugural recipient of the Endowed Professorship in Cerebrovascular Medicine when he joins UPMC and Pitt in February 2022.

Nogueira is widely known for his work in acute stroke diagnosis and treatments, with an emphasis on optimizing endovascular stroke treatments. He has been a leader in the revolution of treating acute stroke with mechanical thrombectomy and has served or is serving as the principal investigator on seven multicenter trials.

Nogueira comes to UPMC and Pitt from Emory University School of Medicine, where he was a professor of neurology with secondary appointments in neurosurgery and radiology and director of the neuroendovascular service at Grady Memorial Hospital in Atlanta
Nogueira received his medical degree from Federal University of Ceara in Fortaleza, Brazil. Following a year of internal medicine training at the University of Miami, he completed his neurology residency at the Harvard Medical School combined program at Brigham and Women’s Hospital and Massachusetts General Hospital. He then completed a fellowship in neurocritical care and stroke and a fellowship in endovascular neurosurgery and interventional neuroradiology, both at Massachusetts General Hospital. His expertise has resulted in more than 300 national and international lecture invitations.
