The UPMC Center for Sustainability was recently among 26 organizations honored with the 2026 Governor’s Award for Environmental Excellence. The award, given by the Shapiro Administration, honors innovative efforts that are improving air and water quality, reducing pollution, restoring ecosystems, and building healthier, more sustainable communities throughout Pennsylvania. Honorees were evaluated for their degree of environmental protection, innovation, collaboration, economic impact, climate resilience, sustainability, environmental justice, and measurable results.
The UPMC Center for Sustainability was recognized for collecting 4.2 million pounds of recyclable materials across UPMC campuses last year. Since being established in 2023, the center focuses on systemwide efforts to reduce environmental impact, including waste prevention, reuse, and recycling. By embedding sustainability practices into daily operations, expanding recyclable and reusable material streams, and tracking environmental outcomes, UPMC is reducing emissions across the entire lifecycle of products—from manufacturing and transportation to disposal.
Several key initiatives have generated the measurable results UPMC is recognized for, including:
- • The elimination of thousands of single-use products through reusable alternatives.
- • The donation of more than 100,000 pounds of unused medical supplies to Global Links, a nonprofit organization that redistributes medical products worldwide.
- • The redistribution of 62,808 pounds of surplus food to community members in need through the nonprofit 412 Food Rescue
- • The elimination of approximately 1,200 single-use blood pressure cuffs per month by switching to reusable cuffs at Radiology departments at several UPMC hospitals
These initiatives have delivered significant environmental benefits. They reduce landfill use and lower greenhouse gas emissions. Through its sustainability initiatives, UPMC demonstrates a scalable model that benefits patients, employees, communities, and the environment.
