Nurse by Day, Animal Advocate by Night

By: Autumn Bellan

At 10 years old, Andrea Patti began volunteering at her local humane society, spending every Saturday for the next decade walking dogs alongside her aunt. That passion for caregiving at an early age blossomed over the years and still motivates Andrea today.

In her spare time, Andrea, a senior professional staff nurse in the Emergency Department (ED) at UPMC Chautauqua, devotes her additional energy to fostering, rescuing, and caring for animals in need with the help of Empire Animal Rescue Society, based in Salamanca, N.Y. This compassion mirrors her work in the busy UPMC Chautauqua ED, in a position she’s held since completing the LPN to RN bridge program at UPMC Jameson School of Nursing at UPMC Hamot.

At UPMC Chautauqua, the staff have banded together to help Andrea support her passion for animal rescue. Many of her colleagues have fostered with the organization, and they share photos of the animals you can adopt on screens throughout the hospital.

While she continues to learn how to balance her busy schedule working in the ED and saving animals in need, Andrea is grateful she can provide care in areas she has been passionate about for so long.
