UPMC Appoints New Leaders

Effective January 1, 2021, Tal Heppenstall is stepping down from his positions as executive vice president and treasurer, UPMC, and president, UPMC Enterprises. After joining UPMC in 2003 following a career in investment banking, Heppenstall was responsible for the management of UPMC’s investment portfolio and financing needs. In 2015, he extended his role to include oversight of UPMC Enterprises, which leads UPMC’s innovation and commercialization efforts.

Jeanne Cunicelli will assume the role of executive vice president, UPMC, and president, UPMC Enterprises, on January 1. Cunicelli, who joined UPMC in 2017, is currently executive vice president at UPMC Enterprises, where she leads the translational science efforts to accelerate the application of scientific discoveries to deliver new models of care. She brings more than 20 years of investment experience in the life sciences industry to her new role.

Effective October 1, 2020, Ed Karlovich will be appointed executive vice president and chief financial officer, UPMC. He has been interim CFO since December 2019. Karlovich joined UPMC in 1990, and he has served in various financial leadership roles, most recently as vice president, chief financial officer and chief of staff for UPMC’s Health Services Division. His focus has been on supporting innovative care delivery models, physician partnerships, affiliation strategies and organization redesign.

J.C. Stilley will be appointed senior vice president and treasurer, UPMC, effective January 1, 2021. Stilley joined UPMC’s treasury function in 2006 and was appointed chief investment officer, UPMC, in 2013.
