UPMC has announced the appointment of Frederick M. Hargett to the position of executive vice president and chief financial officer, effective October 1. Earlier this year, Edward Karlovich announced his retirement as CFO.
Hargett comes to UPMC from Novant Health, Inc., where he has served as executive vice president and CFO for 15 years. Novant Health is a large successful non-profit integrated health system headquartered in Winston-Salem, NC., encompassing 16 medical centers, more than 1,900 physicians in more than 800 locations and numerous outpatient surgery centers, medical plazas, rehabilitations programs, diagnostic imaging centers and community health outreach programs.
During Hargett’s tenure as CFO, Novant grew from a $1.5 billion organization to an $8 billion organization, expanding clinical programs and services into more areas. Prior to becoming Novant’s CFO, Hargett spent five years in the roles of financial planner and analyst, and executive vice president of finance.
“I am pleased that our team has recruited such an outstanding fiscal expert and leader with tremendous experience steering long-term diversified strategic growth while stewarding core financial functions of daily operations,” said Leslie Davis, president and CEO, UPMC. “With our shared vision to continue growing access to UPMC’s care, I am grateful Fred has chosen to join us, and I am pleased to welcome him to UPMC.”
A native of Charlotte, NC, Hargett earned undergraduate degrees in public health and business administration, a master’s degree in accounting at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and is a certified public accountant (CPA). He spent more than seven years at Ernst & Young as a growth strategy advisor to health systems before joining Novant Health.
