Diane Muscarella suffered from liver disease for close to 10 years before she came to UPMC and learned she was an ideal candidate for a living donor liver transplant, a process where a healthy person donates a portion of their liver to someone in need. Brian Muscarella, her son, immediately volunteered to get tested, and felt nothing but relief and empowerment when he found out he could end his mother’s suffering. The transplant took place in February 2017, and the pair has fully recovered.
