In the January issue of First Friday, we begin the new year with the first installment of the recurring series, “In Your Words.” The series is a space for UPMC employees to share personal essays, narratives, or other creative expression in relation to their work in health care. Authentic and real, “In Your Words” may deal at times with themes that can be difficult, as so many of us grapple with challenging experiences when caring for our patients and our communities. It’s an opportunity to shed light on our employees’ unique perspectives and offers a platform for peer-to-peer sharing and inspiration.
This first feature written by Melony Murray, DNP, programmatic nurse specialist, UPMC Children’s Hospital of Pittsburgh, details her raw reflections on a difficult shift. In her own words, Melony shares her thoughts on the challenging and empowering moments that impacted her perception of her own career aspirations.
“You turned that night into something more than a memory; it became the reason you lead and practice the way you do,” Melony wrote.
This letter to herself offers a unique look into the difficult decisions many of us weigh in our minds, as well as inspiration for what can move us forward in those tough moments.
