Residents of New Kensington and the surrounding communities now have access to a state-of-the-art facility made possible largely due to the St. Margaret Foundation and its donors.
Foundation, hospital and community leaders recently gathered to celebrate the grand opening of the UPMC St. Margaret New Kensington Family Health Center, which began seeing patients in early May.
“The St. Margaret Foundation’s partners in philanthropy filled in the gaps with hope and promise to bring the dream of a new community health center to life,” said Mary Lee Gannon, president of St. Margaret Foundation. “We’re grateful for this collaboration and to give this beautiful facility to the people of New Kensington.”
Services available at the new $4.3 million facility include primary care, obstetrics, pediatrics, opioid use disorder intervention, psychiatry, social work and behavioral health.
The center at a glance:
- 8,000 square-feet
- Family lounge, with “Kids Corner”
- 12 private exam rooms
- Behavioral health rooms
- Onsite laboratory
- Outdoor courtyard, with seating and fresh greenery
- Multi-purpose room for the community’s use
The Richard King Mellon Foundation and the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania were the largest donors to the facility. The Staunton Farm Foundation funded the Sunshine Space—a multipurpose room for community meetings, health education events, classes for medical students and more.
Dr. Jonathan Han, program director of the UPMC St. Margaret Family Medicine Residency Program, has been practicing in the New Kensington area for 20 years and “couldn’t be more excited” about the new facility.
“Twenty years ago, we hung up a mission statement in our hospital that promised that we would ensure our patients would have access to all levels of the health care system, that we were committed to the medically underserved and that we would take care of everyone,” said Han. “I’m so humbled that we have been faithful stewards of that mission and are moving forward into the next 20 years.”
Dave Patton, president of UPMC St. Margaret, described the years of work that went into establishing the facility, as well as the quality of care that can be expected there.
“The caregivers in this building are providing their patients with world-class health care. It’s truly a blessing to be here in New Kensington,” said Patton. “It gives me chills to think about what this facility means for the city of New Kensington and our partnership here.”
“The New Kensington community is important to UPMC and our commitment to bringing world-class health care to where our patients live can be seen with the opening of this state-of-the-art facility,” said Leslie C. Davis, executive vice president of UPMC and president of UPMC Health Services Division. “The services we’re providing here are designed to meet the health needs of this community. UPMC will continue reinvesting across our regions to advance clinical and service excellence.”
