Emily Yarish, systems analyst, Information Technology (IT), began her journey at the University of Pittsburgh, where she initially aspired to become a physician assistant. However, a volunteer experience at UPMC Presbyterian made her realize she preferred supporting clinicians behind the scenes. Her sister, who worked in health care IT, introduced her to UPMC’s IT Rotational (ITR) program, a two-year, salaried program that includes four rotations across the IT department.

“For someone trying to find their groove, their confidence, and their way through corporate America, it truly was an outstanding experience,” said Emily.
As an ITR, she created drug and alcohol health records in Epic with the ambulatory eRecord team, built her project management skills with Clinical Connect Health Information Exchange, evaluated emerging technology solutions with Enterprise Architecture, and addressed identity and access management initiatives with Information Assurance Services. After completing the program, she became a full-time information security analyst at UPMC.
Now seven years into her career at UPMC, Emily appreciates the network of mentors and peers she has built. “The value of mentorship is something that is hard to comprehend until you experience it,” Emily said.
These relationships boosted her confidence and motivated her to transition from cyber-security back into electronic health records.
